Learn a second Language the “F A S T” way
Learning a second language can take a long time but there are some things you can do to speed up the learning process. Use the “FAST” method to help you to communicate in a second language more quickly.
FULL immersion in the language speaking environment is a key to developing fluency in the target language. Immersing yourself in the language and culture will help you develop the pronunciation and vocabulary to communicate well. The best way to do this is to study the language in the country where it is spoken. The immersion approach is so effective because the teaching of the language, the content and culture is all without the use of your first language. In addition, after lessons the maximum amount of time can be spent on practicing the skills you learn during lessons. But, if this language immersion approach is not possible for you, there are some things you can still do in your own country to maximise your learning opportunities. Utilise the internet, listen to podcasts, try joining groups and forums that speak in the target language and go to cafes, bookshops etc where the target language is spoken.
ADD new words to build up your vocabulary. Aim to learn 5-10 new words every day. These words should be useful words, ones that can be used in a wide range of situations. Write the new words down and make vocabulary lists by themes or categories. Review your word lists every day. Carry a notebook and note down new words as you hear them. Try and use the new words you have learned daily in your speech.
SPEAK – as much as possible. Speak with other people. Speak by yourself and record yourself. Say your new vocabulary words aloud many times. Reading aloud will help you to retain vocabulary and improve your pronunciation. Try to read texts that you find interesting, then you will be more likely to enjoy it and study more!
T – TV and tapes – watch television and listen to tapes in the target language as much as possible. Listen to the way people pronounce and stress words. Focus on particular words, phrases and grammar. Repeat sentences that you have selected and record yourself. Compare your recorded version to the models you hear. When you listen think about what you are listening to, what is the speaker doing? Learn about the words and grammar that people use to convey what they are doing.
So, try the FAST method to learn a language quickly, the more you expose yourself to the target language, the quicker you will learn it.
